Here’s a factoid we bet you didn’t know: When you’re in the sun there is an actual time that your skin says, “I’ve had enough! Stop! Uncle!”

The trouble is most of us ignore our skin’s warning. If you’re in the sun without sunscreen and your skin starts to get pink, you’ve got two choices:

  • Apply sunscreen
  • Get out of the sun!

Slightly pink skin is a good thing. You’ve gotten just the right amount of Vitamin D that your body needs. Any more than that and you’re like an egg frying. Not good.

Sunscreens are a temporary defense against UV rays but most people underestimate how much they really need.

To get the most out of your sunscreen, use this formula:

Your maximum time in the sun without burning x the SPF number= safe sun minutes

So, if you’re fair, you may have 10 minutes in the sun before your skin turns pink. Multiply that number by your SPF. Let’s say it’s 30.

10 x 30=300 safe sun minutes

Is there a catch to this rule? Most definitely! If you’re swimming, sweating, or towel-drying frequently, cut the number of safe minutes in HALF.

Even if you’re wearing a higher SPF, you can’t just apply once and forget about it. Apply liberally (just like it says on the tube) every 2 hours.

Save yourself years of prematurely aged skin. Know when to say ‘Uncle!”
